Today we saw the first referee mistake that directly interfered with the game's outcome, in Italy vs Australia.
The penalty shot that made Italy win the game was not valid. And even if you think it was, the attacking player committed a foul against the first Australian that tried to stop him, and the foul was not given as it should.
So, these two fatal mistakes led Australia to World Cup Elimination.
I ask myself why these things keep happening. Why the referee cannot stop the game for 30 or so seconds to decide on a dubious play, maybe watching, in this pause, various angles that the cameras got in the enormous screen in the stadium.
I think that's one of the only ways to reduce these mistakes, they occur too often, but this one was 100% decisive, so it was the most significant of them all until now in the World Cup.
Some people here in Brazil think there is a plot against countries that aren't from Europe to prevent them from eliminating European countries, but I don't buy that. I think the judge made a mistake and if he saw that the Australian guy did not touch the Italian striker's legs and the fact is that the Italian player just tripped over him, he could have changed his mind if he was allowed to reconsider and not be obliged to validate the play in a one second.
